Wikinews promotes the idea of participartory jounalism because of the belief that citizens know what is news like no others. You are invited to join in this effort, and share news that is of interest to you.

On January 15, 2001, a group of people started a daring experiment: an encyclopedia for all languages made freely available to everyone on the planet with internet access, forever, at a time when about 10% of the world possessed internet access. In the following months and years, it was not just technology that made this dream a reality, but also an incredibly dedicated community of volunteers who write articles and formulate policies and guidelines for the project. It is done through an open, evolutionary process, in the belief in the possibility of consensus, and in the desire for the betterment of the human condition, and in love of the human spirit.

The Wikinews project is no less daring. Wikinews is a free content news source of the Wikimedia Foundation that seeks to provide content where everyone is invited to contribute reports about events large and small, either from direct experience, or summarized from elsewhere. Wikinews is founded on the idea to build a unique news environment to enrich the media landscape.
