The {{w|Syrian Armed Forces}} began their assault on Homs using soldiers and tanks as well as {{w|artillery}} on February 4 <!-- NPR February 9--> and it continues to this day. Soldiers frequently clash with anti-government protesters and 'freedom fighters' with the {{w|Free Syrian Army}} in violent and often deadly outbursts. "Omar," (for safety and security reasons we are only using his first name) a citizen journalist with the Homs Media Center created an account on {{w|Bambuser}}, a website where users can stream live footage from their webcams or mobile phones. He would usually begin his broadcast on a daily basis just before sunrise. At 5:18 a.m. ({{w|Eastern European Time|EET}}) in Homs on Thursday, February 9, Omar started what was turning into a daily live broadcast. The sky wouldwas still be dark, butwith sporadiconly a few lights flickering around the area. Sporadic gun and rocket fire between opposingSyrian forces could occasionally be heard throughoutand the area. {{w|SyrianFree Armed Forces|Syrian forcesArmy}} hadcould beenoccasionally bombardingbe Homsheard. forBy nearlysunrise, amuch weekof shellingthe buildingsgun usingbattles tankshave stopped and artillery,much whileof troopsthe fightcity withwould oppositionbe forcessilent ofexcept for the {{w|Freeoccasional Syrianrooster Army}}singing to the morning sun. Just over two hours after sunrise, around 6:15 a.m., tanks inside the city and artillery on the outskirts would began shelling buildings and other targets every few minutes. Sometimes these weapon strikes make it into the camera's view and on February 9, and on some days that follow this was the case. By then, much of the gun battles have stopped and much of the city was silent except for the occasional rooster singing toThroughout the morning sun and rockets being fired, hitting their targets. Just over two hours after sunrise, the rocket fire and tank shelling could be heard getting closer and closer to Omar's position.
