Those who wish to learn wiki (it is very easy) and post their own stories without waiting for someone else to post a story for them can follow our easy step-by-step guide, called Wikinews:Writing an article.

Note that Wikinews only publishes news stories, not opinon pieces. Try to write stories with the knowledge that our readers are from around the globe and probably need local customs, names and relevancy explained in full detail.

Here's how it works:

modifier
  1. Click this link: Submit a story
  2. Enter a headline for the story in the "Subject/headline" field
  3. Type the story in the text field
  4. Press "Save"

Our team of volunteer editors will then look over the story and, if appropriate, add it to the site. If it is rejected, the reason will be put on the Wikinews:Submission log page.

Russia Selling Missiles to Syria

modifier

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced that he has received a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin in which he told him that Moscow will go ahead with its arms deal with Syria.

"I wrote to President (Vladimir) Putin but we got an answer (saying) they are going to sell that kind of weapon to the Syrians," according to Ariel Sharon.

In the past Russia had long denied that it wanted to sell missiles to Syria. The United States and Israel have have told Putin to stop any plans, saying Russian arms supplies would only aid terrorists in the Middle East.

Reporters Forced to Reveal Sources

modifier

Reporters at The New York Times and Time magazine can be jailed if they continue to refuse to answer questions before a grand jury about their confidential conversations with government and civilian sources about the information leak of a covert CIA officer's identity, a federal appeals court ruled.

The decision on Tuesday upholds a lower court's ruling last year that New York Times reporter Judith Miller and Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper should answer confidential conversations with government sources.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit sided with prosecutors in their attempt to compel the reporters to testify before a federal grand jury about their sources.

Defrocked priest gets 12-15 years for rape

modifier

Cambridge, Mass. - According to The Globe and Mail defrocked priest Paul Shanley was sentenced yesterday to 12 to 15 years in prison yesterday for raping a boy in the 1980s, one of the highest-profile cases to stem from the U.S. Roman Catholic clergy abuse scandal.

During a sentencing hearing, his accuser, now a 27-year-old firefighter, described the convicted former priest as a "monster" and "the lowest of the low." There was scattered applause when Mr. Shanley, 74, was escorted from the packed courtroom in leg irons.

Defence lawyer Frank Mondano said he was worried that his client could die in prison, "given his age and frailty." He also expressed concern about his client's safety behind bars, especially since John Geoghan, another defrocked priest, was slain by a fellow inmate in 2003.
